The Best Ways for Brands to Tweet about #MarchMadness
The 64 teams have been decided, and March Madness 2015 will officially kick off in less than two hours. Millions of fans will turn to Twitter to cheer on their favorite teams, celebrate buzzer beaters, and cheer on late-game rallies like this one from the University of Dayton.
March Madness lasts until April 6, which is plenty of time for brands to join the action and engage fans on Twitter. In fact, Twitter reports that 75% of sports fans use the social network to follow their favorite athletes and teams, and 61% are active and/or tweet while watching sporting events. March Madness is no exception. Last year, the tournament generated over 14 million tweets.
How can you take advantage of the excitement during March Madness 2015? Here are some ideas:
Tip 1: Create team-related content
In between games, ask your fans to choose the winners of the games by favorite-ing or retweeting. Engagement rates stay above four percent between games and on non-game days. Don’t forget those keywords and hashtags!
Tip 2: Offer trivia
As Buffalo Wild Wings knows, sports fans love trivia. Offer a March Madness trivia question of the day and reward the winner with a trial or free merchandise.
Tip 3: Don’t Drop the Ball
Keep up with your campaign. Do not just stop the conversation halfway through. Again, this even lasts for a few weeks. Be sure to stay committed.
Tip 4: Promote your local team
If you’re a small or regional company, promote your local teams! Give a shout out to the nearby colleges and include them in your graphics. Not only does this help with engagement, it shows your local consumers that you care about the area.
Tip 5: Share your office pool
Start a bracket competition in your office and report on the employees that are winning. This helps create team comradery and boosts engagement from your own employees, who are your strongest brand ambassadors!
